Editor and Interim Publisher
Lorraine served as editor-in-chief from 2004 to 2015 and as deputy editor prior to that. Her experience includes stints as a journalism instructor at Northwestern University and Columbia College; newswriter and producer at WGN-TV; and reporter at the Chicago Sun-Times and the Daily Southtown. She received a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Ohio State University.
Melissa came on board in March 2014. Previously she worked as a reporter at El Nuevo Herald/the Miami Herald and the Yakima (Wash.) Herald-Republic, and spent a year in Nicaragua as fellow for the Inter American Press Association. She studied journalism and Latin American studies at Michigan State University. Her beats include teachers, labor, early childhood education and state policy.
Before joining Catalyst in June 2015, Kalyn covered education at The Aurora Beacon-News and served as a deputy press secretary at Chicago Public Schools. She received a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University and teaches journalism at Loyola University Chicago.
Operations and Marketing Manager
Christine came to Catalyst as a designer in 2002, straight out of graduate school at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, where she also completed her undergraduate degree. In 2006, she took over design for Catalyst’s sister publication, The Chicago Reporter. During her time here, she has helped launch new websites and spearheaded redesigns for both magazines and she’s won several awards for her page design and graphics.
