Layoffs by the numbers: 3,129 so far

So far, this year’s school layoffs total at least 3,129. CPS data indicates that of those, about 44 percent were support staff, 29 percent were new teachers, and 27 percent were tenured teachers.

However, the actual number is likely even higher, since CPS has not yet released information about tenured teachers with good ratings laid off from turnaround schools. Those teachers (like highly-rated teachers from closing schools) go into the district’s Reassigned Teacher Pool, where they are able to work as substitutes for one school year at a higher rate of pay than other subs.

These “displaced teachers” from turnaround and closing schools are not included in the district’s official layoff numbers.
