Two Chicago charter operators are slated to open their first campuses outside the city, in Rockford, over the next two years.

In September, Galapagos Rockford Charter, a branch of the charter in West Humboldt Park, will open serving students in kindergarten through 3rd grade. Chicago International Charter Schools-Rockford will open in fall 2010, serving kindergarten through 4th grade. Galapagos-Rockford will eventually expand up to 8th grade; CICS-Rockford plans to expand through high school.

In September, Galapagos Rockford Charter, a branch of the charter in West Humboldt Park, will open serving students in kindergarten through 3rd grade and will eventually expand up to 8th grade. Chicago International Charter Schools-Rockford will open in fall 2010, serving kindergarten through 4th grade, and plans to expand through high school.

CICS is appealing a decision by the Waukegan School District to turn down the operator’s application to open a college prep campus in that city.

A third new charter, the Legacy Academy of Excellence (not connected to Legacy Charter in Chicago), is also slated to open this year in Rockford. According to the Illinois Network of Charter Schools, these three charters will be the first charters in Rockford and will join the existing nine charters outside of the city of Chicago.
