WebExtra: CTU pension is ‘stable’

As executive director of the Chicago Teachers’ Pension Fund, I must comment on Kurt Mitchell’s cartoon displaying a crumbling pension fund in the April 2006 issue. We are funded at 79 percent and most experts would agree that ratio is stable. There is no need to incite fear in any of our hard-working Chicago teachers. Many teachers work for low wages and often in difficult conditions. Most teachers look forward to the retirement security provided by the pension fund. The pension fund board of trustees is constantly fighting the Chicago Board of Education, the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois to make good on promises they have made to fully fund the teachers’ pension. Now let’s hope district, city and state officials fulfill those obligations.
